This was a one-off bespoke development to construct a 3,000 sq ft house in Surrey. When going through the planning stages of this project, there were a number of conditions that we had to meet as part of the permission for planning, due to the construction taking place in a conservation area. These conditions included: the house must be built with handmade bricks laid in Flemish bond with clay roof tiles and ball top finials, and cast iron rain water gulleys. White painted timber framed sliding sash windows were also part of the consent. So, we were faced with the challenge of building a Victorian property with contrasting modern day features in the property, which we did to perfection! The exterior new build Victorian façade was complimented by a modern interior finish, which worked exceptionally well. So much so, that we were recognised by the Reigate and Bansted architectural society for this project.
The interior included 3-meter-high ceilings with ornate cornice set in straight lines. The aluminium anthracite grey bi-fold doors, to the rear of the property worked well with the oak flooring and hand crafted kitchen. Whilst the solid oak staircase in the centre provided a magnificent feature to this modern day grand house. The property was fitted with an air source heat pump, as its main source of renewable energy. Under floor heating which was powered by the heat pump, along with the property being highly insulated and extremely air tight throughout, contributed to this house being very energy efficient. An additional touch was the wall mounted DEFRA approved log burners to add to the aesthetics, whilst providing another renewable heat source.
We named the house after a famous cricketer whom once had residency on this street. Walter Read – former captain of England in the 1890’s.
